- Asthma is a major public health problem that is growing in America -- 31.3 million Americans have been diagnosed, representing a 25 percent increase since 1999.
- Asthma is a huge burden economically, costing $183 million in direct medical costs and $140 million in indirect costs (i.e.; lost work days to care for child)
in 2005, according to the Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America.
- Asthma is the leading reason for children to miss school (14 million lost school days annually) and be hospitalized.
