Steering Committee
The Steering Committee, consisting of committee chairs, members-at-large, local coalition representatives, American Lung Association and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency representatives, and Ohio Department of Health Asthma Program staff, functions as the administrative arm of the Ohio Asthma Coalition (OAC). The Steering Committee meets monthly to make decisions and recommendations in implementing the Ohio Statewide Asthma Plan.
The Ohio Statewide Asthma Plan
The Ohio Statewide Asthma Plan was first adopted in June, 2004, as a way to guide asthma activities both within the OAC and in organizations statewide. In 2009 the plan was revised with major input from the coalition. The second edition of the plan was based on three broad objectives under which committees and the organization structure was formed. Each year the activities portion of the workplan is updated for the period of one year. You may access the state plan, the current work plan and the organizational table at the following links:
Committee Descriptions
Ohio Asthma Coalition structure was designed to promote the functions of the coalition and to implement the Ohio Statewide Asthma Plan goals and objectives. Committees are either standing committees to promote coalition functions or project initiatives to develop and implement interventional strategies to implement the plan.
Standing Committees:
Advocacy –in partnership with the American Lung Association works with elected officials to encourage consideration for Ohioans with asthma and their needs and concerns.
Research – currently inactive, is to develop relationships with Ohio asthma researchers to promote networking, sharing and more asthma research.
Networking/Resources – works with the steering committee to promote coalition membership, network development and communications. Oversees OAC Website and newsletter functions and participates in meeting planning.
Ways and Means – oversees the financial health of the coalition and works with the steering and coalition initiatives on acquisition of funds to implement plans and interventions.
Conference Planning – plans the biennial OAC Research and Education Conference. Develops programs and manages logistical functions of the conference.

Each plan will be comprehensive to make a significant impact on asthma in the community and in the state including policies, system and behavioral changes. All initiatives will be implemented first in areas with significant asthma prevalence that demonstrates disparate impacts of asthma.
Clinical Initiative – develops patient centered medical home strategies for asthma that change the way that asthma care is delivered by primary care practice, hospitals and emergency departments in the community.
School Initiative – develops strategies and interventions to improve the asthma friendliness of schools and works with staff to implement policies, systems changes and improve knowledge of how to work with children with asthma.
Home Visit Initiative – works with multiple stakeholders to develop community programs to implement multi-focused home visits to improve asthma control.
