  Steering Committee
The Steering Committee, consisting of committee chairs, members-at-large, local coalition representatives, agency representatives and Ohio Department of Health staff, functions as the administrative arm of the Ohio Asthma Coalition (OAC). The Steering Committee meets monthly - alternating between a face-to-face meeting in the Columbus offices of the American Lung Association and a telephone conference - to make decisions and recommendations in implementing the Ohio Statewide Asthma Plan.

Organizational Changes adopted June, 2009

As part of the response to the results of the coalition survey in late 2008, a reorganization of the coalition was adopted at the June 5, 2009, meeting of the coalition. The new organization table can be seen by clicking here.

Also at the June 5, 2009 meeting, the new Ohio Statewide Asthma Plan was adopted.   The plan consists of two parts:

Standing Committees

Advocacy Committee

Advocacy and legislation concerns are covered in a subcommittee that functions under the guidance of the OAC Steering Committee. The subcommittee is charged with the development and dissemination of a public policy agenda that identifies major legislative and regulatory objectives and presents strategies for achieving them. It also promotes the development of a legislative network for the purpose of activating stakeholders on asthma legislative and regulatory issues.

Current Chair: Shelly Kiser, American Lung Association

Research Committee

The research committee is in the process of forming in early 2010.  This committee will form a network of researchers across Ohio and facilitate networking and learning opportunities for all of them.  There will also be special electronic networking spaces for the researchers to share ideas and ask each other for information.  Researchers are being recruited to participate in planning the activities of the committee.

Current Chair: Glen Needham, PhD, The Ohio State University

Networking and Resources

Networking is an important and valued aspect of being in a coalition.  This committee provides information and advises on publications of the OAC, this Website, public awareness of asthma in Ohio and other membership, networking related to the public face of asthma and the coalition.

Current Chair: Marilyn Walton, Akron Children's Hospital

Ways and Means

This new committee of the coalition is taking on the finances of the coalition from all aspects including management of funds and raising funds for coalition activities.  This includes grant seeking and writing, managing funding for the biennial conference of the coalition and working with committee chairs to plan projects and activities of the coalition.

Current Chair: Pat Christoff, Dayton Children's Hospital

Conferences

The conference committee coordinates the planning and execution of the biennial Ohio Asthma Education and Research Conference of the coalition.  Planning is comprehensive from selecting the date, developing the agenda, obtaining speakers and continuing education credits to the final report on the conference.  Conferences of the coalition have been held in 2006, 2008, and next on October 8, 2010.

Current Chairs: Barb Rushley, Central Ohio Primary Care Providers and

Roberta Taylor, Premier Community Health, Dayton

Ohio Statewide Asthma Plan

Current Chair: Kevin Morris, Nationwide Children's Hospital

This committee is comprised of the chairs of the four initiatives of the coalition: Clinical, Home Visits, School and Health Plans.  Each of these will be discussed separately.

  • Clinical Initiative - The committee will identify evidence based interventions for a variety of clinical settings such as primary care practices, emergency department, in- and out- patient centers. The initiative will be a comprehensive plan to provide resources to practitioners and to assist in guideline based asthma management.
  • Home Visit Initiative - The committee is evaluating evidence based interventions in order to create a comprehensive asthma home visit that can be spread throughout Ohio.  Various levels or styles of home visit may be designed for the specific professional who is going to the home, i.e. nurse, respiratory therapist, registered sanitarian, community health worker.
  • School Initiative - The committee is evaluating existing school interventions in order to design a comprehensive intervention for Ohio.  Some of the aspects of school asthma resources that are being considered are: coaching and physical education staff, school nurses, administrative staff and teachers.
  • Health Plans - The Ohio Asthma Health Plan Collaborative has been meeting since June, 2009 and is completing goals and objectives for engaging members and providers, sharing aggregated data to develop a better picture of asthma in Ohio and addressing access issues.  Fourteen of the eighteen largest health plans in Ohio are participating.

*Committees are all open to new membership
